The Dream

Most of you know about my "Humans of Raleigh" project that I started a few months ago. For those that have not take a look at www.humansofraleigh.com to check it out. :-)
But because of that project I found myself in Raleigh yesterday. It was Martin Luther King day and there was going to be a March in Raleigh. So packed up my camera and I went out to downtown Raleigh. And when I arrived people were already gathering up and there was some music playing.

I got to talk with some of the people that were participating. All had their own reasons to be there that morning. From justice for all, to helping the poor and giving back to the community. Then I also got to talk to this lady.

She told me that she was raised in Alabama and was one of the protesters in the sixties and she and all her friends got arrested for being on the bus. Those who have seen the movie "The Butler" recently might recall history a little better now. Today she was with her friend and they got a little emotional. Having done the military homecomings for OpLove before, I felt "that" feeling coming up again. "The-photographer-gets-emotional"-feeling. I do not always welcome that feeling when behind my camera, but when it pops up it is almost always unstoppable. The lady looked at me and she said it was hard. I put my camera down and walked towards her. Making a photo now, wouldn't be appropriate. We talked a bit and I said to her that I couldn't change history but asked her if it would be okay to give her a hug. She smiled. And we hugged. And while doing that I felt a tear running down my cheek. She thanked me and said every year after she had been on the March. Every year. And she was going to be doing that as long as she could.

"I am the dream."

Wherever the camera takes me

My camera and I have seen some nice & interesting places over time. Beautiful landscapes, architecture & nature. But this one was different. It started with, "Hey Petra, I need a picture for work that shows my hobby, could you do that?". Hmmmm, that sounds like fun. Sure! And so I ended up in this different time & place!

Where they had nice bike shops and old fashioned drive-in burger places.

There was even this little gas station, where service must have been great.

I mean pretty special, if you ask me. And all was in close proximity of a rail road crossing....

And yes, trains were passing left and right....

Fun place right? Oh and then, I almost forgot, there was the picture for work of course!

Meet Grace. Grace is getting married this Summer and her mom needed some pictures to announce the wedding in the newspaper.

So I took some profile pictures of her not too long ago. It was great meeting her and she is going to be such a beautiful bride in July!

The best smile

Doesn't she have the best smile?! Loved working with her. It was fun!

We started at the railroad tracks and just within 5 minutes of the shoot, we managed to get her hands dirty and completely black from one of the wagons there! Not planned, at all!!! Luckily we had some water and a towel standby to clean them..... Resulted in some great laughs though! It's good, when it's fun!

Calling home!

Calling home the old fashioned way can be very hard.... You really have to stand way on your tippy toes to dial that number!

Little girls

The name of this sweet little girl is Meez. At first she was a bit hesitant, but later on in the photo shoot, she really was getting used to the camera and did awesome! Loved how she, so quickly, changed into a little model!

En what is better then one little girl? Exactly, two little girls! Meez & her sister.
